Advanced Production
System for Sustainable and
Productive Roofing Retrofit
PROJECT
ADAPTIVE!
PROJECT - ADAPTIVE
ADAPTIVE aims to develop
a new system
RESEARCH FOR SUSTAINABILITY
advanced production for the retrofit of building roofing which will enable the reduction and potential
elimination of the accumulated environmental impact of its production chain,
substantially increasing productivity
for the construction industry.
RESEARCH FOR PRODUCTIVITY
a composite solution is sought for the retrofit of flat roofs in current buildings. A completely prefabricated solution that generates zero waste,
materialized by biological and synthetic polymers deriving from the waste
of other industries.
EFFICIENT USE OF WATER
the purpose is to increase the building’s energy performance, collect and store rainwater, and provide for the use of the roofing area as a gardened leisure space, integrated with equipment for autonomous electric energy production.

The construction industry faces two major challenges: productivity and sustainability.
The productivity challenge can never be overcome without mitigating the overdependence on specialized human resources, which is why prefabrication is the way of the future.
The challenge of sustainability depends on the industry's commitment to reduce waste from overproduction and waste generation, a challenge that is also expected to be mitigated with the development of industrial-based technological solutions such as those that will be developed under the ADAPTIVE project.
Nuno Oliveira Ferreira
Project Director
The landscape of innovation in the construction industry is marked by the dependence on the experimental approach for technology development, and by the size, complexity and cost of the materials involved in test specimens and full-scale prototypes. These constraints restrict innovative capacity to large economic groups, although the greatest innovative capacity resides, as in other sectors, in small, highly qualified teams. The financial incentive of COMPETE 2020 opens the door of innovation to young micro-enterprises with highly qualified resources, and genuinely innovative ideas.

The project ADAPTIVE aims the development of prefabricated composite solutions for the
rehabilitation of flat roofs in current buildings, with a 'zero waste' approach, materialized by
biological and synthetic polymers produced from wastes from other industries. These solutions will
also represent a step forward in terms of technical performance, namely by optimisation of the
current energy consumption, by collecting and storing rain water, and by transforming the covered
area in a landscaped leisure space, while also producing electrical power.

Project ADAPTIVE aims to develop wood-based composites resourcing wood by-products and other agro-forestry lignocellulosic waste which can be applied in the development of roofing solutions for buildings.
This goal is in line with the goals set out in Vision 2040 of the European forest-based sector: efficient use of natural resources and expansion of the circular economy that will increase carbon storage and the replacement of energy-intensive materials of fossil origin by lightweight, biobased, renewable and recyclable materials.
Project ADAPTIVE will thus give its contribution to climate transition which is a priority for Portugal and the world.
